Even though most golfers want to focus on how far they can hit the ball of the tee and true golfer that wants to lower their scores will focus on their short game. It’s a well known fact that over 50% of all your shots come from within 100 yards of the green. So don’t think you should focus more on how to improve your short game? Me too.
Here’s three strategies that you can use today to help you shoot lower scores.
The first strategy is to establish distances with all of your wedges. Not only full swing distances but three-quarter, half and one-quarter swing distances. Let’s say you hit a full pitching wedge 110 yards but you’re only 8o yards out. Sure you may want to use a sand or approach or gap wedge but lets say there are other variables that make it hard to use those other clubs. Wouldn’t it be beneficial if you knew that a three-quarter swing with a pitching wedge went 80 yards? Of course it would. At that point you could hit the shot with great confidence and be sure that its going to end up where you want it to.
The next strategy is to establish distances from just off the green with your pitching wedge and a seven iron. The reason you want to use a seven iron is because most amateurs do not get their chips close enough to the hole they leave it short whenever they use a sand or pitching wedge. By using a seven iron you can be sure that you can get your chips close enough to make a putt.
The third strategy is to practice short putts. From six feet and in. I know this sounds too simplistic but the bottom line is most people when they actually do practice putting they usually do it from longer distances and neglect the short ones. And what frustrates you most on a golf course? That’s right missing short putts. Don’t be that guy. Be the one who makes his short putts and the envy of all your friends.
